City Guide

Phuket

It’s hard to describe Phuket without mentioning its 30-plus, picture-perfect beaches. They are, after all, what lure travellers from around the world to this part of Thailand. Nicknamed the Pearl of the Andaman Sea, Phuket shimmers with its stunning landscapes and seascapes, rejuvenating retreats, delicious cuisine and bargain shopping.

Phuket Town’s, colourful shophouses, bustling night markets and excellent F&B scene make it a top draw for visitors. For those looking to get off the grid, Phuket’s proximity to many of Thailand’s secluded, beautiful islands makes it the perfect place to start an island-hopping adventure.

When to go
Phuket enjoys sunny skies and dry weather most of the year, barring two rainy seasons that happen in May and September. High season starts in November and runs through April, resulting in busy beaches and higher hotel prices. The island experiences tropical weather all year, but the months from March to May are when the Thai summer blankets the country with intense heat.

How to get around
Taxis as well as ride-hailing apps like Grab are a convenient and comfortable way to get around the island. For short distances, visitors can try out the local tuk-tuks or songthaew buses which run to all the major beaches. Car rental agencies such as Hertz and Europcar operate out of the Phuket airport. While motorbikes can be rented from mom and pop shops across the island, they are only recommended for experienced drivers, as accidents are frequent on Phuket’s hilly, busy roads.
