Former military building Factory 798, of East German Bauhaus design and still daubed with Maoist slogans, is now a gallery at the heart of a sprawling art district housed in repurposed industrial buildings. The artists’ studios and their outlets have now been joined by cafés, restaurants and souvenir shops, but foreign and locally-run galleries still stage major shows by big names in contemporary art from China and overseas.
