More than just Madrid’s green lung, El Retiro is equal parts landscaped park and open-air museum.
Locals come here to jog, row boats across the lake, picnic beneath centuries-old trees or wander between rose gardens, fountains and exhibition spaces housed inside the park’s striking Glass Palace and Velázquez Palace.
Don’t miss the statue of the Fallen Angel, Lucifer, which stands an appropriate 666 metres above sea level.
