City Guide
The economic and cultural centre of Kyushu Island and Japan’s sixth most populous city, Fukuoka is often overlooked by travellers who stick to the tried-and-true route that takes a U-turn at Hiroshima. But an hour away by bullet train lies one of Japan’s most coveted food capitals.
Ask any Fukuoka native what sets the city apart and the answer will be unanimous – the food. Whether it’s tonkotsu ramen, pan-fried gyoza, or eclectic fine dining, Fukuoka has it all. The city also boasts its famous yatai outdoor food stand culture. Every day from 6pm, lines of pop-up yatai stands appear along the streets, welcoming revellers deep into the night. There you’ll rub shoulders with local while sampling the great variety of fare on offer.
And when your bellies are full, check out this harbour city’s cultural scene: it’s home to Shofukuji Temple, Japan’s first Zen temple, as well as the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, an authoritative collection of Asian contemporary art that’s a must-visit for art lovers.
When to go:
Fukuoka is a great destination any time of year, but spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are arguably the most comfortable seasons for a visit. Winter is milder in Fukuoka than in other parts of mainland Japan, so December to February is also fine if you wrap up warm. It’s best to avoid the hot and humid summer months (June to September).
How to get around:
Fukuoka is blessed with a comprehensive subway network as well as two overland rail lines – Japan Rail and Nishitetsu Railways. Fukuoka Airport is a quick 5-minute subway journey from the city’s central Hakata Station. Three different bus companies and taxis operate in the city, helping to fill in any gaps in the subway network.
