Hakone
Hot springs and rewarding mountain hikes
An hour or so from Tokyo by bullet train, Hakone is known for its volcanic vents and hot-spring culture, but the region offers so much more to lovers of the great outdoors. Ringed by several major mountain ranges, the massive Lake Ashinoko is home to a rare, partially submerged torii gate. The adventurous can try their hand at the strenuous central Mount Hakone hike, but the nearby Mount Kintoki comes highly recommended for its gentler climb, densely wooded trails and awe-inspiring views of Mount Fuji.
