They say your travel journey begins the moment you step off the airplane. The truth is, it begins at the airport – ideally, when you step into a lounge. Your experience here sets the tone for the rest of your trip. A premium, wonderfully designed lounge is the perfect hideaway from the bustle of airports – an oasis that allows you a quiet space to unwind in luxurious comfort, right before you embark on a fresh adventure.
As such, Singapore Airlines (SIA) takes this aspect of the flight journey very seriously and offers a lounge experience like none other, with benefits that ensure your travels are off to a flying start. And with the recent revamp of the flagship SilverKris Lounge at Changi Airport Terminal 3 – complete with fresh design elements and other amenities – there’s plenty to look forward to.
Below, we share some must-try experiences, along with some pro-tips, to ensure you make the most of your time in the lounge.
1. Admire the SQ Batik Wall in its splendour
Once you enter the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 3, take an escalator up to the second floor. As you ascend, keep your eyes peeled and you’ll be greeted by an eye-catching wall facade covered with handcrafted glass flowers inspired by SIA’s batik motif. Fun fact: 2,626 glass dots adorn the 105 flowers and leaves that make up the 13m-long installation. Created by Singapore-based artist B. Jane Cowie, the stunning wall welcomes you just before the entrance foyer of the SilverKris Lounge.
Tip: If you want an unblocked view of the art installation, turn right after you reach the second floor and make your way to the corridor just beside the escalator and lift. It’s the perfect spot to appreciate the wall in its full glory. Don’t forget to snap a selfie and upload it with the hashtag #FlySQ and #SQbatikwall!
2. Try out an entirely new shopping experience
Forget catalogues and websites, the KrisShop display wall takes shopping to a whole new level. The experiential element blends both physical and digital touchpoints to make shopping more exciting. Using a projector and motion/gesture sensors, the display at the SilverKris Lounge allows passengers to interact with a screen that comes alive when a person stands in its interactive zone. Various “frames” that feature product categories or brands appear on screen and you can place a hand over your desired frame to launch a display with more information.
You can then view photos, videos and other details, including a QR code you can scan to pre-order and have your duty-free shopping delivered directly to your seat on board.
Tip: Use the promo code FLY10 to enjoy S$10 off (minimum spend of S$150) any regular-priced item on your SIA or Scoot flight when you pre-order on KrisShop’s website.
3. Tuck into well-loved local dishes
A central feature of the newly expanded dining area in the Business Class SilverKris Lounge is a live cooking station where you can watch chefs whip up a storm as they prepare special à la carte items before your eyes. Favourites include laksa (available all day), a flavourful noodle soup that packs a punch, on which you can heap a generous amount of ingredients like fishcakes, fresh prawns, quail eggs and tofu puffs. You can also take your pick from a selection of delicious options from the self-service food counters. We recommend the chwee kueh (available for breakfast only), a light and airy steamed rice cake topped with sweet and savoury preserved radish.
4. Sip on exclusive off-menu cocktails at the Crystal Bar
A drink at an airport bar is a quintessential travel experience, so make sure to grab a cocktail at the flagship Crystal Bar at the First Class SilverKris Lounge. The chic bar features a unique wall that is adorned with crystal lights, each inspired by the shape of the aquatic ginger flower. Specially designed by Lalique for SIA, the lights glow and dim subtly, creating a soothing and calming atmosphere.
The Crystal Bar is also where SIA’s ongoing Cocktail Conversation series is filmed. Check out this video for the team’s chat with Singaporean thespian Hossan Leong, and try out the specially concocted “Leong Island Tea” for yourself. The team also sat down with Australian chef Matt Moran and created an exclusive “Matt-hattan” cocktail for the occasion. The customised cocktails are tailored for each personality and available only at the Crystal Bar for the month of each episode launch.
Tip: The special Cocktail Conversation drinks are available by request only and aren’t on the menu, so make sure you post your secret beverage on the ’gram for bragging rights!
5. Take a nap at one of the day rooms
If you need a snooze, retire to one of four fully furnished day rooms in the First Class SilverKris Lounge. All rooms come with adjustable lighting and a table with power outlets so you can work if necessary. Two rooms come with Poltrona Frau reclining armchairs, while the other two have single-size Tempur Zero G beds with a Supreme Firm mattress, both of which offer you a chance to catch some shut-eye while you wait. You can also request a yoga mat and a diffuser with COMO Shambhala essential oils for some stretching or complete relaxation.
