In 1833, the Neoclassical architect John Soane negotiated an Act of Parliament to ensure that, after his death, his home on Lincoln’s Inn Fields would be opened to the public in exactly the same way he had left it. Inside is a treasure trove of architectural and archaeological artefacts, such as ancient ruins; paintings by Hogarth, Turner and Canaletto; the sarcophagus of Egyptian King Seti I; as well as drawings by Sir Christopher Wren, all displayed as a chaotic jumble.
