Liang Po Po (Jack Neo)
Jack Neo is Singapore’s most recognisable multi-hyphenate — he’s a comedian, actor, and filmmaker — and it’s his signature granny character that made him a household name. Hunched over a cane, decked out in a floral blouse and grey bun, and wheezing her trademark “hoo-hoo-hoo”, Liang Po Po first shuffled onto screens on the ’90s Chinese-language sketch show Comedy Nite before headlining her own film, 1999’s Liang Po Po: The Movie. In it, she breaks out of a retirement home only to tangle with gangsters.
She’s back in 2026’s Liang Po Po vs Ah Beng, facing off against — then teaming up with — Malaysian security guard Ah Beng (Jack Lim). Filmed largely around Kuala Lumpur, this cross-border co-production plays up the friendly rivalry between Singaporeans and Malaysians, with Liang Po Po and Ah Beng turning unlikely action heroes as they take down an organ-trafficking syndicate to save Ah Beng’s adopted daughter, Xiao Yun (Ivory Chia).
