Dan Da Dan S2

If there’s something strange in your neighbourhood, you should call the ‘Dandagang’ (the family). Led by two teenage paranormal investigators — the occult-obsessed Ken ‘Okarun’ Takakura and the psychic Momo Ayase — this ghost-busting, alien-hunting duo shares a classic Mulder-and-Scully dynamic. Things get a lot weirder in Season 2, which adapts the “Cursed House”, “Evil Eye”, and “Kaiju” arcs of Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga.

In the “Cursed House Arc”, Momo’s childhood friend Jiji recruits the duo to exorcise his haunted home. Okarun quickly realises that Jiji might see Momo as more than just a day-one homie, but a romantic rival proves to be the least of his problems once they uncover a bloodcurdling secret hidden within the walls. The horrors and laughs continue into the “Evil Eye Arc”, where the group scrambles to manage Jiji’s volatile new possession, and Okarun undergoes brutal training under the strict supervision of skilled yokai Turbo Granny. Finally, the season closes out with the “Kaiju Arc”, which sees the duo team up with mecha-nerd Kinta Sakata to take down a massive, Godzilla-like behemoth.

You and I Are Polar Opposites

In the immortal words of Paula Abdul, “Opposites attract”. And no mismatched pair embodies this better than Miyu Suzuki and Yusuke Tani, two high schoolers who couldn’t be more different.

Miyu is cute and cacophonic, while Yusuke is calm and contemplative. That they’re worlds apart in personality doesn’t stop Miyu from wanting to get closer to the reticent boy sitting next to her in class. But every time she reaches out to the cool and quiet Yusuke, she becomes a hot, blubbering mess. Luckily, her feelings are not unrequited, and the duo begin an awkward relationship.

Based on the web manga of the same name, this show wastes no time in getting the odd couple together, with the usual anime tropes of furtive hand-holding, comical misunderstandings, and public confession of love all taking place within the first episode.

Fans of slice-of-life romcoms like Skip and Loafer will swoon and cringe in equal measure at the crushing embarrassments and anxieties suffered by the hopeless romantics.

Takopi’s Original Sin
The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and Takopi’s Original Sin’s titular protagonist is about to learn this the hard way. Takopi is a pink, octopus-like extraterrestrial from Happy Planet, and he’s come to Earth to spread love and joy. Armed with cool gadgets to rival those of Doraemon, he sets his sights on a despondent Shizuka Kuze, looking to lift her spirits.

But this isn’t another Lilo & Stitch-esque tale of girl-meets-alien with a happy ending. When the naive Takopi’s attempt to cheer his new friend up results in tragedy, he travels back in time to understand what went wrong, only to realise that some problems can’t be fixed, and not everyone can be saved.

Based on the web manga written and illustrated by Taizan 5, this six-episode anime hits hard with heavy themes — including bullying, child abuse, and infidelity — and devastating emotional moments. Director Shinya Iino, who had worked on the similarly dark Made in Abyss and much lighter-in-tone Dr. STONE, explores the unimaginable cruelty of children (and their parents) and the limits of kindness when it comes from a place of ignorance.
