These mesmerising clashes between good and evil are the space opera franchise at its most dramatic. Watch these iconic Star Wars moments on KrisWorld.

Few movie weapons are as iconic as the lightsaber. A glowing blade that hums with power (and sometimes, menace), it’s Star Wars’ sci-fi spin on the knight’s broadsword — elegant and uber cool.

Across the Star Wars films, lightsaber duels have delivered some of the franchise’s most emotional, operatic, and unforgettable moments. Here are seven of the best ones.

7) Yoda vs Count Dooku (Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
This fight may look a little silly now, but at the time of the movie’s release, it was electrifying. Before Attack of the Clones, Yoda (Frank Oz) had only appeared as a puppet. This marked the first time audiences saw the Jedi Master in full combat mode — and it was worth the wait.

In this fight, Yoda drops his cane, summons his lightsaber with the Force, and ignites it. Suddenly, the wise old mentor becomes an acrobatic whirlwind of martial prowess.

Creating Yoda’s fighting style wasn’t easy. Animation supervisor Rob Coleman and his team struggled to find the right approach until Jar Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best suggested drawing inspiration from anime and martial arts films — a decision that helped shape the character’s lightning-fast combat style.

6) Darth Vader vs the Rebels (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story)
Technically, this fight isn’t a duel, but it’s too awesome to leave off the list.

The closing moments of Rogue One seamlessly connect to A New Hope, as Darth Vader storms a Rebel ship in search of the stolen Death Star plans. In a darkened hallway illuminated only by his crimson blade, Vader cuts through Rebel soldiers like something out of a slasher movie.

It’s awe-inspiring and terrifying. And it reminds us why Vader remains one of cinema’s most intimidating villains.

Remarkably, the scene was added late in production. Director Gareth Edwards revealed at a BAFTA Q&A that it was the final sequence filmed during reshoots — a last-minute addition that became one of the franchise’s most iconic moments.

5) Rey and Kylo Ren vs the Praetorian Guards (Star Wars: The Last Jedi)
The Last Jedi may divide fans, but its visuals are undeniably striking, and none more so than this throne room showdown.

Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) join forces to battle Supreme Leader Snoke’s Praetorian Guards, surrounded by dramatic red curtains and a gleaming reflective floor. The guards wield electro-plasma weapons, creating a dynamic and unpredictable fight.

The sequence is thrilling not just for its choreography, but for what it promises — a possible alliance between Rey and Kylo. Of course, things don’t work out that simply.

Director Rian Johnson noted that the set was largely practical: “The throne room, the reflective floor, and the red fabric all around — when we walked on set, it looked exactly like it does in the movie.” The result is one of the saga’s most visually memorable battles.

4) Darth Vader vs Luke Skywalker (Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
As the emotional climax of the original trilogy, this duel carries enormous weight.

Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) faces Darth Vader (James Earl Jones/David Prowse/Sebastian Shaw) in front of Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), who pushes Luke toward the dark side. By now, Luke has completed his training with Yoda, so we see him at his most skilled — but also most conflicted.

When Vader threatens Leia (Carrie Fisher), Luke almost loses control, briefly teetering on the brink of darkness. But ultimately, compassion wins. Luke redeems his father, leading to one of the Star Wars movies’ most poetic and operatic conclusions.

3) Darth Vader vs Luke Skywalker (Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back)
Deja vu. It’s Vader vs Luke again. We had to include another one because this duel leads to one of the most memorable movie moments ever, but this father-son confrontation actually happens before the previous one (see No. 4).

Here, Luke interrupts his Jedi training to rescue his friends on Cloud City — only to walk straight into Vader’s trap. The fight unfolds across catwalks and shadowy corridors, building toward one of the most famous reveals in movie history.

Luke loses his hand. Vader delivers the immortal line: “No, I am your father.” Luke refuses the dark side and plunges into the abyss below.

The dramatic setting, emotional stakes, and shocking twist make this one of the franchise’s most pivotal and unforgettable confrontations.

2) Anakin Skywalker vs Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith)
This is the tragedy at the heart of the prequel trilogy.

Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) finally succumbs to the dark side, forcing his mentor and brother figure Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) to confront him on Mustafar — a planet whose fiery, hellish terrain reflects Anakin’s descent into darkness.

The 12-minute duel remains the longest lightsaber battle in Star Wars, spanning lava rivers and collapsing structures. It ends with Anakin’s devastating injuries, necessitating a life support suit for him and setting the stage for Darth Vader’s rise.

“These characters love each other like brothers,” Christensen told Vanity Fair. “That’s why the fight is so tragic.”

George Lucas had envisioned the confrontation decades earlier, telling Rolling Stone in 1977 that Vader would fall into a volcanic pit — an idea that finally came to life in spectacular fashion.

1) Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul (Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace)
The hype for The Phantom Menace — the first Star Wars movie in 16 years at the time of its release — was astronomical, and Darth Maul (Ray Park), Palpatine’s Sith apprentice, quickly became a fan favourite. With his signature double-bladed lightsaber and acrobatic fighting style, he brought a new level of intensity to Star Wars combat.

The climactic duel on Naboo delivers on that promise. Ray shields separate the fighters, building tension before Maul kills Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson). Obi-Wan then defeats Maul in a dramatic finish.

The sequence is elevated by John Williams’ majestic, thunderous composition “Duel of the Fates”, whose choral segments add mythic weight to the battle. Behind the spectacle lies a deeper theme: Qui-Gon’s death shapes Anakin’s future.

Dave Filoni, president and chief creative officer of Lucasfilm, offered this interpretation of the duel: “What’s at stake here is really how Anakin is going to turn out. Because Qui-Gon is different from the rest of the Jedi … He’s the father Anakin needs.” This is a battle for the very soul of Anakin, and his fate is sealed when Qui-Gon dies.

The scene is thrilling, emotional, and unforgettable — the gold standard for Star Wars lightsaber duels.
