Firebrand
King Henry VIII was infamous for having six wives: Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, and Catherine Parr (whose first name can be spelt several ways). Alicia Vikander stars in this biopic focusing on Parr, with Jude Law starring opposite her as Henry VIII.
Based on Elizabeth Fremantle’s novel Queen’s Gambit, Firebrand was retitled to avoid confusion with the Netflix series. The movie has been praised for its costumes designed by Michael O’Connor, which are considered more historically accurate than those of most Tudor period dramas.
Firebrand shows Parr getting arrested before the King and taken to a dungeon instead of her servant finding the arrest warrant that had been dropped by accident and taking it straight to her. The movie’s biggest departure from history is its ending, which we shan’t spoil, depicting something that did not happen to give Parr more agency in the story.
“[King Henry VIII has] dominated the narrative of these six women for 500 years, and [we were] trying to steal back the narrative a little bit and have him be a supporting role to his wife’s story,” Law tells The Hollywood Reporter about the movie’s approach.
