The world is waking up to all the benefits a good night’s sleep can provide. Here’s where you can turn your next getaway into a dream destination — literally.

Diet, exercise, and sleep. The adage is that working on these three core pillars of wellness will help pave your way to a better quality of life. And for a long time, the wellness industry has prioritised the first two (proteinmaxxing and strength training, anyone?) After all, today’s #hustle culture is quick to reward a disciplined diet and pushing past your limits to hit that new running pace.

Working hard at sleeping well, though? Sounds like an oxymoron; feels like a thoroughly indulgent waste of time.

Yet the data couldn’t be clearer: deep, restorative sleep is increasingly hard to come by today. According to a 2025 study in Sleep Medicine Reviews, 16.2% of adults worldwide (roughly 852 million people) live with insomnia, while 7.9% experience severe insomnia.

The main culprits? Poor sleep hygiene like blue light exposure right before bed (e.g. doom-scrolling), rising anxiety levels, and a culture that champions productivity above rest may all be contributing factors to today’s sleep epidemic.

Sleep Travel: Checking In to Check Out
Enter sleep tourism: the latest evolution of wellness travel, where the goal isn’t to squeeze more into a holiday, but to finally slow down.

From sleep-focused hotels offering personalised programmes to retreats built around circadian rhythms, relaxation, and restorative treatments, the idea is simple: travel somewhere specifically to sleep better — and return home feeling genuinely rested.

Think blackout rooms, sleep consultations, meditation, sound therapy, and sleep-tracking technology, all designed to help make those precious hours between bedtime and breakfast count.

Where to Experience Sleep Tourism
Ready to make slumber the highlight of your next holiday? Here are four destinations to check into. Don’t sleep on it!

Sensei Lānaʻi, A Four Seasons Resort, Hawaii (Rest and Reset Programme)
At Sensei Lānaʻi, a Four Seasons Resort, better sleep gets treated as part of a wider wellbeing reset.

Its five-night Rest and Reset programme begins before arrival, with a WHOOP wearable sent to your home to collect sleep and recovery data. Once on Lānaʻi, a dedicated Sensei Guide helps shape your personalised itinerary, while a Sleep 1:1 session digs into your rest patterns and a Mindset Guide explores your stress responses using biomarkers like heart rate variability, alongside private sessions for mindful movement and sensory eating.

There’s also priority access to daily wellbeing classes, from yoga and meditation to fitness and mindfulness practices, alongside two 90-minute spa treatments.

Before departing, guests also create a practical plan for maintaining better sleep at home, with two follow-up calls included after the stay.

Carillon Miami Wellness Resort, Florida (Sleep Well Retreat)
At Carillon Miami, the four-night Sleep Well Retreat puts sleep technology centre stage.

Guests stay in a one-bedroom luxury apartment equipped with the Bryte Balance Smart Bed, which allows each person to customise their side of the mattress. Throughout the night, its technology can adjust firmness to relieve pressure points, while Somnify combines gentle mattress movements with calming audio to help you unwind. Come morning, Sleep Insights offers information on sleep stages, duration, and patterns, while Silent Wake Assist uses subtle motion to wake you without disturbing your partner.

Beyond the bedroom, the retreat also includes a 50-minute Vagus Nerve Soothing Massage, touchless wellness experiences, daily movement classes, meditation, healthy meals, and access to Carillon’s extensive Thermal Hydrotherapy Circuit.

Equinox Hotel New York
At Equinox Hotel New York, sleep gets a distinctly performance-focused makeover.

Developed in partnership with sleep scientist Dr Matthew Walker, the Sleep Lab brings together an optimised sleep environment and a suite of recovery technologies. Guests sleep on Eight Sleep’s adaptive mattress technology, which tracks overnight sleep and provides personalised recovery insights the following morning.

The room is also designed around circadian rhythms, with personalised Sleep + Wake Automation, AM and PM soundscapes, and Circadian Color Meditation. Even the bathroom gets involved: a contrast-therapy shower lets guests alternate between steam and ice-cold water. A dedicated sleep kit, including a high-performance eye mask, sleep patch, and Equinox Hotels Sleep Tea, completes the sleep-centric experience.

Sleep & Nature Hotel, Lavre, Portugal
As its name suggests, sleeping well and being in nature go hand in hand amid the lush, rolling landscapes of Alentejo’s countryside.

This retreat was conceived around the idea that reconnecting with nature can help restore the body’s natural rhythm. Its Nature Rooms are housed in individual wooden structures with private balconies, while other rooms use natural materials such as cork and stone.

Guests can spend their days cycling through the countryside, swimming in the indoor or outdoor pools, or joining casual yoga and meditation sessions. For more structure, its dedicated sleep retreats combine wellness dining with guided meditation, yoga, and an 85-minute Sleep Ritual featuring a herbal Epsom-salt foot bath and slow massage.

It’s a refreshingly low-tech interpretation of sleep tourism: less monitoring every REM cycle and more stepping outside, breathing deeply, and letting the quiet Alentejo landscape do some of the restorative work.
