Saipan
Roy Keane is one of the greatest players in soccer history. He’s also a little bit of a grump.

In Saipan, it’s not his legendary skills on the field that are on full display. Instead, the movie shines a spotlight on his infamous feud with Mick McCarthy in 2002 — the year when they were under pressure to lead the Republic of Ireland football team to World Cup glory.

Keane (Éanna Hardwicke), a hot-headed and no-nonsense athlete, quickly becomes unhappy with the team’s training prior to the competition. Still, McCarthy (Steve Coogan), balancing personal and public expectations, isn’t ready to give in to his star player. There’s no hero or villain in Saipan, just two large personalities willing to sacrifice everything — except their pride — for glory.

Diego Maradona
Even before he made World Cup history, people knew Diego Maradona was something special: in the early 1980s, his agent hired two cameramen to follow Maradona, the football hopeful who would later be immortalised as the man with the ‘Hand of God’.

Hundreds of hours of footage from this period were then shelved for decades, until 2019’s documentary film Diego Maradona. With archival footage and insights from the man himself, the film unveils several stories about Maradona that had been previously untold.

For one, Maradona reveals in the film that, despite his awe-inspiring skills on the field, his training regimen was admirably lax: a regular week involved playing a game on Sunday, going out until Wednesday, then hitting the gym on Thursday. Diego Maradona director Asif Kapadia commented that the player “would look so incredibly out of shape, but then he’d train like crazy and sweat it off by the time matchday came along”. Watch the doc to gain more little-known insights into the football icon.
