Laksh Lalwani, known by the mononym Lakshya, is a Bollywood star who has been waiting in the wings. After supporting and leading roles on TV and withstanding two stalled film projects, he makes his splashy feature film debut in Kill.

The uncompromisingly violent action movie is about a pair of commandos who happen to be on a high-speed train while a heist takes place, pitting the duo against a deadly gang. It has drawn comparisons to John Wick and Oldboy and earned positive reviews from international critics, with a Hollywood remake already announced. Here are five things to know about Lakshya.

1. He starred in India’s most expensive TV show

Lakshya made his acting debut at age 19 in 2015, starring in the MTV teen drama Warrior High, set at a boarding school in Dehradun, India. He then led the romantic fantasy series Adhuri Kahaani Hamari, which ran for 131 episodes. He had a supporting role in the Austria-set drama Pardes Mein Hai Mera Dil/Chasing My Heart. Lakshya played the titular role in the 199-episode-long historical epic series Porus, dramatising the Battle of the Hydaspes, in which the Punjab king Porus fought Alexander the Great. It is billed as the most expensive Indian TV show ever made.

2. He has had a long road to movie stardom

In 2019, Lakshya signed a three-picture deal with Dharma Productions, one of India’s top film production and distribution companies. He was set to star alongside Kartik Aaryan and Janhvi Kapoor in the romantic comedy Dostana 2, and production had already begun when the film was abruptly shelved.

“I got to know on the day when it was announced officially. Before that, I had no idea what was going on,” he tells News18 about how he learnt the film was not going ahead. “Dostana 2 didn’t happen, so I was sad about it for a few days, but later I realised there is no point in worrying about something that is not in my hands,” Laksyha tells Filmfare. Additionally, he was set to co-star with Shanaya Kapoor in Bedhadak, but that film was also shelved.

3. He underwent intense physical training for Kill

To get into action hero mode for Kill, Lakshya went all in. “The prep for the action went on for about seven to eight months. We used to practise martial arts for four to five hours every day … I used to rehearse every day with 40 goons, fighters, and my co-actors, and there are 40 to 45 killings in the film, so we used to train accordingly,” he says. Lakshya declares that there were “no days off, no cheat days, [and] no cheat meals” in his regime.

4. He’s not chasing the ‘action hero’ title

While Kill is an action-packed movie, Lakshya isn’t chasing the title of ‘India’s biggest action hero’. “I’m excited to do more of what I love: work. These titles will come and go. Also, if I start looking at roles with the intention to be ‘the next something’, I will only add a lot of pressure on myself, and I don’t work well under pressure,” he tells Cosmopolitan.

5. These are his four favourite movies:

The online movie review portal Letterboxd is known for its ‘four favourites’ feature, and it has become a red-carpet staple, asking actors and filmmakers for their four favourites. Lakshya’s picks are the crime black comedy Gangs of Wasseypur, romantic drama The Lunchbox, musical Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and political crime thriller Sarkar.
