Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
For kids born in the late ’80s and early ’90s, the Home Alone movies are holiday mainstays, especially the first two. The first Home Alone featured Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) fending off a home invasion while being accidentally left behind during a family vacation.
In the sequel, Kevin is again separated from his family. This time, he accidentally boards a flight to New York while everyone else is headed to Florida for Christmas. By sheer happenstance, Kevin meets the villains of the first movie again — Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern), formerly known as the ‘Wet Bandits’ and now known as the ‘Sticky Bandits’. Kevin must stop them from robbing Duncan’s Toy Chest, a toy store run by the kindly Mr Duncan (Eddie Bracken).
The movie’s memorable characters include the Pigeon Lady (Brenda Fricker) and the hotel concierge (Tim Curry). Lost in New York features more of the slapstick violence from the first movie, this time served with a heaping of charming New York Christmastime atmosphere.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
CS Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia series remains a staple of children’s fantasy fiction. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first book in the series, was adapted into live-action and animated TV series. In 2005, a lavish, big-budget film version followed.
During the Blitz in the Second World War, the Pevensie siblings are sent to stay with Professor Digory Kirke (Jim Broadbent) at his country estate, far from the violence. Lucy (Georgie Henley), the youngest sibling, chances upon a wardrobe under a tarp in an otherwise empty room. Stepping through its doors takes her to the mystical realm of Narnia, filled with magical creatures. After returning, Georgie takes her brothers, Peter (William Moseley) and Edmund (Skandar Keynes), and her sister, Susan (Anna Popplewell), along with her. There, they meet the friendly Mr Tumnus (James McAvoy), the faun. The children join the magical lion, Aslan (Liam Neeson), in the fight against the tyrannical Jadis the White Witch (Tilda Swinton), who wants to conquer Narnia.
Directed by Andrew Adamson (Shrek), the movie boasts spectacular sets and stunning backdrops (some scenes were filmed on location in New Zealand). The props and speciality costumes were crafted by Wētā Workshop, the special effects house behind the Lord of the Rings movies.
Jack Frost
Michael Keaton has played several iconic characters across his career, including Betelgeuse (Beetlejuice), Batman (Batman), and the Vulture (Spider-Man: Homecoming). He has also played a snowman. This fantasy family drama Jack Frost stars Keaton as the eponymous character, who is an ageing singer and harmonica player. Jack’s touring schedule means he does not spend enough time with his wife, Gabby (Kelly Preston), and young son, Charlie (Joseph Cross). During a winter storm, he dies in a car accident on Christmas day.
A year later, Charlie plays a song on his father’s harmonica. This magically summons a snowman that materialises outside the Frost family home, and it turns out that this is Jack himself, back from the dead but in a different form. Jack has a second chance to repair his relationship with his family, but his time is running out.
Keaton’s fellow Batman actor George Clooney was originally cast in the film before departing it; the snowman puppet/costume was constructed by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop based on Clooney’s face.
Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to All!
It is now a well-established meme that Mariah Carey is the queen of Christmas. Jokes about Carey ‘defrosting’ as Christmas draws near are ubiquitous on social media, and Carey herself has acknowledged the joke. She makes an annual “It’s Time” announcement video, celebrating the transition from Halloween to the Christmas season heralded by the strains of her 14-times Platinum hit, “All I Want for Christmas Is You”.
Merry Christmas to All! Is a TV special filmed at Carey’s concert in New York City in December 2022. Of course, Carey performs “All I Want for Christmas is You” alongside classics like “Silent Night”, “O Holy Night”, and “Joy to the World”. Special guests include Carey’s twin children, Monroe and Moroccan, Broadway star Billy Porter, rapper/producer Jermaine Dupri, and actress/talk show host Drew Barrymore.
A Year-End Medley
Call it the Korean answer to Love Actually. A Year-End Medley weaves together multiple plot threads that combine the holiday rom-com formula with unmistakable K-drama elements. The movie is set at the Hotel Emross in downtown Seoul at Christmastime, featuring the staff and guests and their various romantic escapades.
The cast includes Han Ji-min as manager So Jin, Lee Dong-wook as CEO Yong Jin, Lee Hye-young as businesswoman Catherine, Im Yoon-ah (aka Yoona) as hotel staffer Soo Yeon, and more. The movie’s popularity led to it being re-edited into a six-part TV series, with additional material filmed.
Selena + Chef: Home for the Holidays
It’s time to get cosy with comfort viewing about comfort food. Singer/actress Selena Gomez launched her cooking show Selena + Chef in 2020, and Home for the Holidays, a special four-episode season, aired in 2023. Her special guests (the ‘+ Chef’ of the title) include culinary personalities, such as Alex Guarnaschelli, Michael Symon, Claudette Zepeda, and Eric Adjepong. You might ask: There’re a ton of cooking shows with chef cameos, so what’s special about this one? Well, Gomez feels representative of your average cook — not too much of an expert, clueless at times, but always possessing a can-do attitude and willing to learn from kitchen maestros.
Join Gomez and the chefs as they share holiday memories and prepare delicious dishes fit for a festive feast, including black pepper roast beef, tamales with spicy pork filling, lobster with homemade pasta, shrimp and banana grits, chocolate candy cane bark, and malva pudding.
Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas
Country music queen Dolly Parton puts on a glittering, campy Christmas concert in this TV special. The performances are connected by a narrative in which Parton wants to stage a grand Christmas extravaganza like the ones she remembers from her childhood. Her harried producer, Sam Haskell (Tom Everett Scott), has mere weeks to get the show into shape.
During the rehearsal and the actual taping, everything that can go wrong does, including set pieces falling from the ceiling. Parton and her special guests must pull through the chaos to deliver the magic. Parton’s special guests include Miley Cyrus (Parton’s real-life goddaughter), Willie Nelson, Zach Williams, Jimmy Fallon, and Billy Ray Cyrus. It’s cheesy, silly, and doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but it is altogether charming in Parton’s unmistakable style.
